More than half of women experience hair loss or scalp problems during the menopause, research suggests.
The survey found that common symptoms during the mid-life hormonal change include hair shedding as well as an itchy or flaky scalp.
These findings, published last week, back up research showing the menopause can lead to a reduction in moisture and oil on the skin and scalp.
Experts say hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help the changes, as can a healthy diet and vitamin supplements.
The menopause occurs when production of the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone decline, usually starting between the ages of 45 and 55, and at an average age of 51 in the UK.
The most common symptoms include hot flushes, night sweats, mood issues and difficulty sleeping. Many patient also experience vaginal dryness, which can also lead to discomfort during sex.
The survey, carried out by coal-tar shampoo brand Polytar, found that 53 per cent of menopausal women questioned experienced hair loss.
It also found that around a fifth of premenopausal women experienced hair and scalp problems during their period.

‘Hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle can have a direct impact on scalp health,’ says Ruth Collis, a Sussex-based hair-loss expert.
‘These shifts influence oil production, skin-cell turnover, and the scalp’s inflammatory response, which is why many women notice flaking, itchiness, and other scalp issues at consistent points in their cycle.
‘While in menopause, the long-term reduction in oestrogen can result in increased dryness, sensitivity, and irritation.’
The findings come as a growing number of women appear to be suffering hair loss.
According to Google, the number of online searches for ‘hair loss’ and ‘hair thinning’ in women have more than doubled since 2021.
