Morgan McSweeney, that is Keir Starmer’s chief of staff, has resigned. He’s thrown him under the bus.

Morgan McSweeney has resigned as Keir Starmer’s chief of staff in the wake of the Mandelson scandal.

The Prime Minister’s right hand man quits after backlash to him pushing for Lord Mandelson to be appointed ambassador to the US.

But let’s not forget who thought that Mandelson, a person who had to resign from the cabinet twice for dodgy dealings and had a close friendship to a convicted paedophile, was a good appointment as US ambassador.

Darren Jones has previously said: “The reason the Prime Minister picked Peter Mandelson was because we want to do things differently. We recognised the important relationship between our two countries and I think Peace of Madison will be a brilliant ambassador for us and will form a very strong partnership with the new administration as well.”

David Lammy once said: “Peter Mandelson is a man of considerable expertise. He’s the right man for this moment to be our ambassador. He’s been a business secretary, a Northern Ireland secretary. Of course, he’s worked in the European Commission and he brings all of that to bear. Working as our ambassador in the United States. And of course, he’s looking forward to presenting his credentials to Donald Trump.”

Today, David Lammy has come out and claimed that he warned the Prime Minister against it and Darren Jones, well, he’ll say anything – remember on Question Time when he tried to convince us that women and girls were crossing the channel on dinghies?

That being said, Sir Keir Starmer seemed the most enthusiastic of them all in backing Mandelson.

He’s previously said: “He’s a true one off. A pioneer in business and in politics. Many people love him, others love to hate him. But to us, he’s just Peter.”

In September 2025, Sir Keir said: “The ambassador has repeatedly expressed his deep regret for his association with him. He’s right to do so. I have confidence in him and he’s playing an important role in the UK-US relationship.”

Why would they endorse a man who already resigned twice from the cabinet for dodgy dealings?

The first time Mandelson resigned was in 1998 for obtaining an interest free loan from a cabinet colleague, whose business was the subject of an inquiry by Mandelson’s department. Mandelson failed to declare the loan in the members interests and had to go.

The second time was in 2001, following accusations that he used his position to influence a passport application for Indian born British billionaire Sir Richard Hinduja, the eldest brother of Britain’s richest family. Nothing to see here, guv. Right.

I mean, this was all public knowledge before Mandelson’s latest grift. Do they think that we’re stupid?

After all that, here is Pat McFadden trying to blame someone else: “I think the Prime Minister has acted in good faith throughout. I think Peter Mandelson has put him in a very bad position. When more information came to light last September, he very quickly fired Peter Mandelson.

“He’s horrified by the revelations of the past week. He’s apologised to the victims of this, and rightly so. So I think, you know, we will see more when all these vetting documents are published, as I hope they are very soon.”

And this is the party who promised that they would restore integrity into politics. They were meant to get rid of sleaze in Westminster.

Now, Keir Starmer has thrown his chief of staff under the bus, the buffer between him and his colleagues, attempting to blame everyone else but himself. I’m afraid, Keir, the buck stops with you. It’s not a case of if, it’s when.
